Last Milk – Inside Memory
Monochrome photographs, randomly arranged.
A number appears, then vanishes—
revealing another image of a primate beneath it.
Each one, like us, is a mammal, born and raised on this Earth, fed with milk.
Yet many are now listed as endangered species on the Red List,
their presence quietly fading from the world.
Our society marches forward with globalization, consuming everything in its wake.
But is that truly what should be prioritized for lives on the verge of disappearing?
Haven’t we misjudged what truly matters?
If we do nothing,
the film will forget the light—and fade from memory.
So, what if we became the ones to receive the light next?
Little by little is enough—like the love and memories that were once burned into us.

一つ番号が表れると消え、その裏から霊長類の写真がまた現れる。それらはすべて、私たちと同じく地球上で暮らし、母乳で育った哺乳類たちだ。しかし、その多くは絶滅危惧種としてレッドリストに記され、いずれこの世から姿を消してしまう存在かもしれない
いま社会はグローバリゼーションを推し進め、あらゆるものを消費している。だがそれは、消えゆく命にとって、本当に優先されるべきことなのだろうか。私たちは、盛大に優先順位を見誤ってはいないだろうか
このまま何もしなければ、フィルムは光を忘れ褪せていく
次は私たちが、光を受けとめる存在になるのはどうだろうか？

焼きついたあとに見えるもの——消えゆく命と記録の話
無作為に並べられた、モノクロ写真の数々。そこには静かに佇むように霊長類たちの姿が写されている
一枚の写真に番号が浮かび上がると、それはまたすぐに消え、その裏から別の霊長類の像が現れる──その繰り返しの中に、命の儚さと繋がりが見えてくる
本作は、前作「ラストミルク」で描ききれなかった視点を継承する、続編にあたる第二章である。グラスやミルクといった象徴的なモチーフを用いた前作とは異なり、今回は“写真”という記録媒体を主軸としながら、より静謐で内省的な問いかけへと深化している
「あいまいな記憶のように、立て続けに消えていく絶滅危惧種。それをビジュアルにした」と語る中谷。「母乳を飲み、地球で育ってきた哺乳類──それが私たち人間であり、彼らでもある」その思いは変わらず、今回は“記録”そのものが持つ力と限界を描き出そうとしている
現代社会はグローバリゼーションのもとで拡大と成長を是とし、限りある資源や命すらも、消費対象として扱っている。しかしそれは、本当に優先すべきことなのだろうか。「私たちは、盛大に優先順位を見誤ってはいないだろうか」その問いは、観る者の奥深くに沈んでいく
一方で、作家は私たちに問いかける
「私たちは、知らないうちに無数の命を犠牲にしながら、記録された情報を見て満足してはいないだろうか。それは行動ではなく、ただの自己満足にすぎないのではないか。まず、彼らを脅かしている環境を知り、自分にできることから実行していくのはどうだろう」
記録することと向き合うこと。見ることと、知ること。その違いに気づいたとき、ようやく私たちの“手”が動き出すのかもしれない
写真という表現が選ばれたことにも、意味がある。もし何もしなければ、フィルムはやがて光を忘れ、記憶の色を褪せていくだろう。だが、私たちがその光を受けとめる存在になることができたなら──それは、命や記憶を次代へ手渡すという行為そのものになるはずだ
「少しずつでいい。愛情や記憶のように、私たちもこの世界に何かを焼きつけていけたら」
本作が投げかけるのは、「消えゆく命に、私たちはどう向き合うべきか」という根源的な問いだ。写真という媒体を通しながらも、そこに込められたメッセージは深く、鋭い。素材を排したことで、かえって“問いそのもの”がむき出しとなり、観る者一人ひとりに真正面から向かってくる
この作品は、単なるドキュメントではなく、生命倫理や環境哲学を内包した視覚的対話である。沈黙の中に響く声に、どう耳を傾けるか──その選択が、次の光を決めていくのかもしれない
この試みは、生命・自然・人間の持続可能性を問う、生命倫理・環境哲学といえるだろう
