This work focuses on the culture of shared bicycles in Japanese cities, and the ways in which people breathe within urban life.

When we come across a bicycle with low tire pressure, we may be touching the lingering breath of a stranger.

The phrase “Free Air” holds multiple meanings—ranging from gravity correction in geoscience to signs of abnormality in medicine. These layers of meaning act as subtle signals of invisible displacements and urgencies, and at times, seem to echo the fatigue or anxiety left behind by someone who used the shared cycle.

Perhaps it is not the tires that truly need air—but us.
